In August 1995, a tractor-trailer crash on Highway 290 killed a Texas father and his teenage son.
Melvin Huff Sr. was driving with his son, Melvin Huff Jr., when an empty tractor-trailer driven by Jay Weiss ran off the right shoulder. Weiss overcorrected, and the truck jackknifed into oncoming traffic and struck the Huffs’ vehicle. Both father and son died.
Injuries and Legal Challenges
The crash killed Melvin Huff Sr. and Melvin Huff Jr., and their family pursued legal action for their losses.
The case turned on disputed questions about whether the driver’s actions or mechanical problems caused the crash. An inspection found a broken brake drum, which the family’s side linked to overtightened lug nuts. The truck’s maintenance company argued the damage happened when the truck hit a ditch.
The driver was left quadriplegic after the crash and died before trial. The litigation involved the trucking company, its maintenance provider, and manufacturers of truck components.
$9.6 Million Settlement
In 1998, a Brazoria County jury awarded $9.6 million to the family of Melvin Huff Sr. and Melvin Huff Jr. The jury found the driver negligent in operating the truck and the fleet owner liable for improper vehicle maintenance.
