Houston HPD Vehicle Hits Pedestrian

A top rated vehicle injury attorney in Houston knows that motor vehicle and traffic accidents happen, and are an unfortunate and routine part of life. Accidents that are truly that—accidents, where no drinking or distracted driving is involved are among the most tragic of accidents. Sometimes even when drivers are doing everything right, something can go wrong.

Early Sunday morning a pedestrian was struck by a Houston Police Department car in Northeast Houston. The accident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, when a man dressed in dark clothing stepped in front of an approaching HPD car. The HPD car was driving west on Lyons near Pannell, and did not have its lights or siren on because he was not headed to an emergency.

Police report that the driver of the HPD vehicle didn’t see the man in time to stop, and accidentally struck the pedestrian. The man was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition, but is expected to survive. The name of the victim has not yet been released, and it has not been determined if charges will be filed against the officer who was driving the police vehicle.

Whether official charges are filed or not, this is a terrible incident for both the pedestrian and the officer involved. Police officers take an oath to serve and protect citizens and their community, but they are as human and fallible as ordinary citizens. Sometimes an accident or making a mistake can have serious consequences, as in this scenario. Anyone would feel horrible from inadvertently causing harm to another human being, but a police officer is likely to feel this remorse and regret even more acutely because of his public duty.
